Nutrigenomics for skin
Nexira’s new proprietary study on nutrigenomics provides innovative scientific substantiation, which positions the company at the forefront of Nutricosmetics. It has also gone one step further with its new 2022 IN-TEST- PASS study. Nexira is pioneering the development of a specific methodology combining the assessment of gene expression in skin tissue within a model that mimics the bioavailability of ingestible ingredients, which can act from within the deeper layers of skin.
In terms of the test protocol, the present study is part of a project aimed at evaluating the effects of nutricosmetics on skin structure and function. In vivo, these active ingredients are absorbed and metabolised through the intestinal barrier before being delivered to the skin by blood. To mimic the intestine absorption of active ingredients in vitro, a reconstructed intestinal epithelium was made. In this second step of this project, the aim was to evaluate the effects of three nutricosmetic ingredient blends on the full genome expression profile of ex vivo human skin.
Identification of beneficial activities
Nexira tested the following nutricosmetic ingredient blends, which have shown outstanding and significant results:
- For clean and care applications – HEPURETM is an organic and synergistic formulation of clove and immortelle extracts. Previously clinically demonstrated with a global action on the liver, HEPURE has an hepatoprotective effect and activates the detoxifying pathway. The new IN-TEST- PASS revealed the activation of gene expression for detoxification enzymes in the skin contributing to protection against pollution, cigarette smoke, UV ageing and xenobiotic compounds while providing antioxidant protection for the skin.
- For orange peel skin and youth activation applications – Oli-OlaTM is a 100% natural olive extract produced from organic agriculture in the Southern Mediterranean region. The transcriptomic measurement (IN-TEST-PASS) of Oli-Ola showed a large modulation of gene expression, including the activation of lipid consumption, inhibition of lipidic accumulation and the inhibition of adipocyte differentiation in skin (Acyl-CoA dehydrogenase, leptin, PPARγ, adiponectin and other regulators of adipocyte’s differentiation), contributing to limiting the appearance of orange peel skin (or cellulite).
Oli-Ola also demonstrated an activation of gene expression for antioxidant skin protection (paraoxonase, glutathione, etc). These genes contribute to reducing the effects of ageing on skin. For skin structure improvement applications – Nexira’s sensorial hibiscus extract activates the modulation of genes involved in the reinforcement of the skin structure (GAGs) and the promotion of hydration, improving skin tonicity and firmness.
